FINAL SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS: VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED

NOW IS THE TIME FOR EVERY GOOD MAN AND EVERY GOOD WOMAN TO COME TO THE AID OF THE CAUSE OF LIBERTY!

Thursday, July 26 5PM to 11PM, Friday, July 27 5PM to 11PM. Saturday, July 28 2PM to 11PM, Sunday, July 29 2PM to 9:45PM  Solon Home Days on SOM Center Road ( Ohio 91) about one mile south of Aurora Road (Ohio 43) I will have a booth. If you wish to volunteer to help man the booth, contact me at 440-248-8620 or dmacko@roadrunner.com. As space allows I will be glad to display literature for Gary Johnson, other Libertarian and pro-liberty candidates (especially candidates in adjacent areas such as Sean Stipe (US 9th) Jeffrey Blevins (US 16th) and Bob Sherwin (Ohio 57th)  as well as that of other organizations which promote liberty, justice and peace, e.g. NORML, Gun Owners of America and other groups which promote our God-given right to keep and bear arms, Veterans for Peace, Greater Cleveland Peace Action and other peace groups, distributors of the American Free Press,  the John Birch Society and any other groups of which I am a member. Preference will be given to those groups which help man my booth.

This event is free and open to the public. There are no parking fees. I would much appreciate if I could have two people with me in the booth to pinch hit when I need to get food or perform other functions. If you can donate your time for three or four hour periods during the times listed above and call me or email me ahead of time including your name, telephone number and address, so that I can remind you or indicate any changes, with a definite commitment now is the time to do so.

For residents of the Fourteenth District, see www.mackoforliberty.com for maps of the district and lists of cities, villages and townships in the district.

Stephen LaTourette, who last year broke his word to never vote for new taxes, has now set another record for himself. Last week, he became one of only TWO Republicans to vote AGAINST a criminal contempt citation against the contemptible apparent criminal, Eric Holder.

If you are not happy with that record and want to talk to people about it, now is your chance to do so, with minimal effort on your part. Bring an awning chair if you can. Food and drinks are on sale or you can bring your own.

ALL VOLUNTEERS FROM ANYWHERE ARE WELCOME.

SPECIAL PROJECT: (This only takes a few minutes and is very important.) In 2008, the City Club of Cleveland conducted open, honest debates, including Congressional candidates Paul Conroy and me, an Attorney General debate which included endorsed Libertarian candidate Robert Owens and an honest Presidential debate which included Bob Barr, Chuck Baldwin and Ralph Nader. You can watch these hour long debates by going to Youtube and typing City Club Macko, City Club Conroy, City Club Owens and City Club Barr when you have an hour for each. This was one of the highlights of my campaign. I believe that these broadcasts have some educational value for future participants.

In 2010, the City Club, in an apparent repudiation of its motto, Citadel of Free Speech, had no debates for any gubernatorial, Secretary of State, Treasurer, Auditor, Attorney General or Congressional candidates.  Go to http://www.cityclub.org/ContactUs/tabid/195/Default.aspx and tell them that the candidates in the 9th, 14th and 16th districts, including representatives of alternate parties, should debate at the City Club.

MAJOR ADDITIONS HAVE BEEN ADDED TO WWW.MACKOFORLIBERTY.COM INCLUDING BASIC CAMPAIGN LITERATURE AND ANSWERS TO QUESTIONNAIRES. LOOK IT OVER AND TELL YOUR FRIENDS. MORE ADDITIONS WILL FOLLOW IN COMING WEEKS.

OUTDOOR EVENTS AT WHICH TO DISTRIBUTE CAMPAIGN LITERATURE

Years ago, when we had to get 5000 valid signatures to have our Presidential candidates on the ballot, there were several outdoor Summer events which enabled us to contact a lot of people. Here are some in or very near my district where you can distribute literature for Gary Johnson and me. Contact me if you are interested. Some of them conflict with Solon Home Days, my primary concern and other events.

Streetsboro Family Days July 26 to 29 http://www.streetsborofamilydays.org/  This conflicts with Solon Home Days so I cannot be there to help you.

Madison Old Fashioned Days August 2 to 5 http://www.madisonofd.com/ This was an excellent petitioning venue, especially when dedicated patriot, Jack Greenways, made Greenways Printing a Ron Paul for President Headquarters in 1988. Jack could never understand why there were not 150 more headquarters in Ohio. Neither could I. Actually, I still cannot figure that out. Eternal memory to him.

Twins Day Festival August 3 to 5 http://www.twinsdays.org/events.html Also, a good petitioning and outreach venue. Unfortunately, there is a also a time conflict.

The Mantua Potato Festival September 7 to 9 http://www.mantuapotatofestival.com/events.html I have never been to this event but so far there are no conflicts.

If you hear of any other events where we can outreach, especially in or very near the 14th District, contact me as soon as possible. Volunteers are always welcome.

I PLAN TO BEGIN LITERATURE DISTRIBUTION IN SEPTEMBER RIGHT AFTER LABOR DAY. IF WE WAIT UNTIL OCTOBER, MANY VOTERS WILL ALREADY HAVE VOTED BY ABSENTEE BALLOT.

OUR NEXT LIBERTARIAN PARTY OF CUYAHOGA COUNTY MEETING:

August 1 7:00 PM Scott Sedlak of the Thomas Jefferson Knowledge Institute will discuss the importance of his organization in educating school children and their parents about the importance of the US Constitution in restoring our liberty.

8:00 PM Ed Wade, Independent candidate for Cuyahoga County Prosecutor, will discuss his campaign.

He obtained over 4100 valid signatures to get on the ballot. He opposes the Democrat political establishment in Cuyahoga County.

As usual, our meeting will be held at Denny’s Restaurant, 4331 West 150th Street, Cleveland, just south of I 71. We will hold our meetings at the same location on the first Wednesday of each month except July. If you wish to eat, you should arrive by 6:00 PM. As always, our meetings are free and open to the public. Bring friends to become better informed.

If you have suggestions for future speakers or programs or any other questions or comments, please email me or call me at 440-248-8620.

THE GARY JOHNSON CAMPAIGN

6 PM Friday, August 3 Judge James Gray, Libertarian candidate for Vice President, will meet voters at Dean’s Greenhouse, 3984 Porter Road, Westlake. The public is invited.

All candidates for President who overcome the daunting task of ballot access and competing in primaries and who are on the ballot in states with sufficient electoral votes to win should participate fully in all presidential debates. Otherwise, the debate is totally crooked.

                     CAMPAIGN APPEARANCES

This is a new feature which will continue until Election Day. Unless otherwise noted, the events are free and open to the public. It is always beneficial to show popular support for candidates. Where possible, direct questions to me so that I have more opportunity to proclaim liberty. An asterisk * indicates an event where I will be addressing the audience. At all other events I will be promoting liberty by mingling with the audience.

I consider my appearances on The Charlie Earl Show, at the Trumbull Township Association Candidates Forum, the Mentor 9-12 Group, the Trumbull Township Association Candidates Forum,  the Cleveland Ron Paul 2012 Candidates Forum and WELW Painesville on March 22  to be successes and good practice. Unfortunately, there was a technical difficulty at WSPD and I did not get a copy of my address.

forward to their response.

2PM to 5PM Friday, September 14 Kent State University Political Science Club Candidates Forum at Kent Student Center Ballroom at 1075 Risman Drive, Kent State University. For more information contact Christopher Clevenger at 937-509-2993.

If you know of any other candidates’ forums or opportunities to speak in my district, US 14, elsewhere in Cuyahoga County, Summit, and the Warren and Youngstown areas, please notify me as soon as possible. It is important to have as much information as possible to invite oneself to such events, especially if the organizers have not done so.

I WILL BE GLAD TO LIST APPEARANCES OF OTHER LIBERTARIAN  CANDIDATES AND OTHER PRO-LIBERTY CANDIDATES WHO HAVE NO LIBERTARIAN OPPONENTS.

As America plunges into a full blown police state with the passage of Section 1021 of the National Defense Authorization Act and signing by Obama on December 31, with almost no mention in the kept establishment media, and the threats of World War III and economic collapse loom ever larger, it is more important than ever to do as much as we can to advance the cause of liberty. Do whatever you can. Your life and liberty and the lives and liberty of those whom you love depend upon it.

                     OTHER COMING EVENTS

FURTHER COMMENTARY

Here is one of the best analyses of the media which I have read and quoted previously. It is especially relevant during an election year when alternate parties and candidates are treated to the media’s traditional blackout.  From http://constitution.org/pub/swinton_press.htm

John Swinton on the independence of the press

Variations on the quote below have been misattributed as a response to a toast, by John Swinton, as “the former Chief of Staff at the New York Times“, before the New York Press Club in 1953. However, research reveals that Swinton (1829-1901), after moving to New York, wrote an occasional article for the New York Times and was hired on a regular basis in 1860 as head of the editorial staff. Afterward holding this position throughout the Civil War, he left the paper in 1870 and became active in the labor struggles of the day. He later served eight years in the same position on the New York Sun and later published a weekly labor sheet, John Swinton’s Paper.

The remarks were apparently made by Swinton, then the preeminent New York journalist, probably one night in 1880. Swinton was the guest of honor at a banquet given him by the leaders of his craft. Someone who knew neither the press nor Swinton offered a toast to the independent press. Swinton outraged his colleagues by replying:

There is no such thing, at this date of the world’s history, in America, as an independent press. You know it and I know it.

There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinion out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job. If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone.

The business of the journalists is to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it and I know it, and what folly is this toasting an independent press?

We are the tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes.

(Source: Labor’s Untold Story, by Richard O. Boyer and Herbert M. Morais, published by United Electrical, Radio & Machine Workers of America, NY, 1955/1979.)

Despite the misattribution, the quote raises the issue of whether there is not continuing truth in Swinton’s remarks, and whether some candid journalist might not be able to fairly say similar things today. Anyone who has associated closely with journalists can hardly avoid finding a ring of truth in such words, and the best evidence lies in the actual product of journalists and how well, or how poorly, it both agrees with and covers what actually happens, especially involving such things as corruption and abuse of power.

For more on the misattribution, see John Swinton – Yes, He Said It, But…

And that was over 130 years ago!
